Fairchild was a popular temperance speaker, lecturing at celebrations and other events across Illinois from 1845 to 1846. He was the secretary pro tempore of the 1846 Illinois State Temperance Society meeting in Springfield, Illinois. Additionally, Fairchild and Charles H. Ray published a temperance newspaper from Springfield, called The Washingtonian. Sometime before 1850, Fairchild moved to Sacramento, California, where he had a second career as a comedian.
