Freeman likely moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1839. For a short time, he ran a grocery store with his brother, Abraham Freeman; the two also operated a general store and a mill together. In 1850, Freeman was working as a grocer and he owned $3,500 worth of real estate. Clarkson Freeman moved to Texas in 1858.
