Gallatin, Albert

Gallatin immigrated to the United States in 1780. A veteran of the Revolutionary army, he was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1790 and to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1795, serving until 1801. From 1801 to 1814, Gallatin served as the secretary of the treasury under presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. He later served as minister to France and to Great Britain. At the time of his death, he was president of the National Bank of New York.
