In 1836, President Andrew Jackson appointed Hudson to the post of recorder of the General Land Office; he continued his service through Martin Van Buren's administration as well. Garland held the office until March 19, 1841, when newly-elected Whig President William Henry Harrison appointed another man to the position. In 1850, Garland was a lawyer living in Lynchburg, VA.
