David Gillespie was an attorney. He attended rural schools in Edwardsville, Illinois as a boy, studied at Shurtleff College for a time, then studied law with his uncle, Joseph Gillespie. He attended some legal courses in Cincinnati, Ohio, and, in 1849, was admitted to the bar in Illinois. Afterward, he partnered with his uncle, forming the firm J. & D. Gillespie. As of 1850, he lived with his uncle. In October 1855, he married Minna C. Barnsback, with whom he eventually had at least six children. By 1860, he owned $8,000 in real and personal property. David and Joseph Gillespie practiced law together until 1861. David then partnered with Charles F. Springer, with whom he practiced until after the Civil War. He died after suffering a stroke.
