George Giffin was a farmer in Coles County, Illinois. Little is known about Giffin’s early life. He was living in Coles County by 1840. Between 1847 and 1850, Giffin received by warrant approximately 322 acres of public land in what would become Hutton Township. His first wife, Hester Kackley Giffin, died, and in September 1850, he married Elizabeth Harris. In 1850, George Giffin was farming and owned real property valued at $2,100. By 1860, he owned real property valued at $4,500 and had a personal estate of $2,000. He had seven children at the time of his death.
