Born: 1825-05-29 Troy, New York
Died: 1892-03-28 Monmouth, Illinois
Flourished: 1847 to 1892 Warren County, Illinois
Abram V. T. Gilbert, physician and druggist, moved to Illinois with his family as a child. He graduated from Rush Medical College in 1847, then settled in Warren County, where he practiced medicine in Berwick, initially in partnership with George H. Wright. He was a founding member of the Warren County Medical Association in 1855. Gilbert opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act and upon the organization of the Republican Party in Warren County in 1856, was appointed to the county’s central Republican committee. He was elected as a Republican to the Illinois House of Representatives, where he served 1857 to 1858. Gilbert registered for the draft in the Fourth Illinois Congressional District in 1863, but there is no further evidence that he served in the Civil War. In 1848 Gilbert married Zidania (Sidana) Kelly and following her death he married Maria Malinda Gaylord in 1867. He was survived by nine children. Gilbert was a member of the Presbyterian church.
