James Gordon was a farmer, postmaster, and pioneer settler of Lynnvile, Illinois. He was the brother of William Gordon and uncle of John P. Gordon. Gordon was postmaster of Lynnville from January 1837 to July 1841, and again from May 1848 to May 1849. In 1850, he was living with his wife and children in Morgan County, Illinois, and owned real property valued at $2,000. In 1860, Gordon was living and farming in Lynnville and owned real property valued at $5,000 and a personal estate of $5,000.
