In 1843, Goddard was admitted on trial as a Methodist minister, and he was stationed in Urbana, Illinois. That year, he married Cynthia Tinker in McLean County. In 1845, he was ordained a full minister and was named a deacon of the Illinois Conference and stationed at Danville.
