Daniel Keller "D. K." Green was a physician and business owner. He married Zerelda Winans on December 28, 1843. They eventually had at least seven children together. In 1850, he lived in Silver Creek in Greene County, Ohio, with his wife and four children, worked as a physician, and owned $975 in real property. He moved to Salem, Illinois, with his family around 1851, where he worked as a physician and owned and operated a drugstore. Although he was consistently anti-slavery, Green's political affiliation shifted over time. He identified with the Free Soil movement and abolitionism, spent time in the Whig Party, was also involved with the Democratic Party for a time, then moved into the Republican Party. In 1856, in reaction to the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, he became involved in the organization of the Republican Party, first in Marion County, Illinois, then at the state level as a county representative, and finally as a district representative at the 1856 Republican National Convention. He also served as a member of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee during the campaign of 1858. By 1860, he owned $5,500 in real and personal property. He died at his home from diabetes and ailments of the throat, lungs, and heart.
