John Van Gundy was a farmer who lived most of his life in Scott County, Illinois. In October 1854, he married Sarah Ann Scoby, with whom he would have nine children. In 1860, Van Gundy was farming near Naples, Illinois, and owned real property valued at $6,000 and a personal estate of $1,000. He continued farming in Scott County until 1873, when he moved to Macon County, where he purchased a farm in Milam Township.
