Hart and his wife, Rhoda, lived in Sangamon County, Illinois, as early as 1829, when he purchased 240 acres of federal land in a part of the county that would later become southern Menard County. After his death, Rhoda retained Abraham Lincoln at least five times in legal actions to settle Moses's estate.
