James W. Hampton was a clerk and city constable in Springfield, Illinois. In February 1845, he married Elizabeth Johnson, with whom he had at least one child. In 1850, Hampton was living in Springfield with his wife and daughter and working as a clerk. He owned $300 in real property. Hampton was active in the Democratic Party, serving as a delegate from the Second Ward to the Democratic City Convention in 1852. In August 1855, he won a special election to become Springfield's constable. In 1856, he was working as a clerk at Ayers & Wardell.
