In 1827, Harmon moved with his mother and siblings from Kentucky to Sangamon County, Illinois, where he purchased land in the western part of the county. In 1833, he married Elizabeth Donner, and together they had eight children. Elizabeth died in 1850 and the family subsequently moved to Libertyville, Iowa. In 1850, Harmon was a farmer and he owned $2,500 worth of real estate.
