Richard Herndon married Mary Wiggs in Woodford, Kentucky, in 1833. He moved his family to Springfield, Illinois in 1843, where he engaged in a general mercantile business for many years. In 1847 and 1848, Herndon served as a juror in at least six cases in which Abraham Lincoln was counsel. In 1850, Herndon owned $2,000 in real property.
