Britton A. Hill was an attorney and author. He attended school in Ogdensburg, New York before studying law. He was admitted to the bar in 1839, and practiced in Albany, New York until moving to St. Louis in 1841. He partnered with John M. Eager until 1848, then, in 1850, formed the law firm Hill, Grover & Hill with his brother, David W. Hill, and William N. Grover. They dissolved this firm in 1858, and Britton Hill focused his practice on cases that involved land, insurance, and railroad law. From 1861 until after the Civil War, he practiced with Daniel T. Jewett as a law partner, but also belonged to the firm Ewing, Hill & Browning of Washington, DC from 1863 to 1865. Hill married twice: first in 1845 to Mary M. Shepard, then to Johanna Behrens. He had one son with each of his wives.
