Palmer Holmes was a farmer, postmaster, and pioneer settler of Tremont, Illinois. In August 1836, Holmes won election as a trustee of the newly-incorporated town of Tremont. In 1837, he purchased eighty acres of public land in Hopedale Township. In March 1839, Holmes married Elizabeth Hinsey. Elizabeth was his second wife, his first wife, Helen, having died in 1836. From June 1839 to around 1848, Holmes was postmaster of Tremont. In 1850, Holmes was living and farming in Tremont and owned real property valued at $3,000. He was a Democrat.
