Humphrey, George

Born in Jefferson County Ohio, George Humphrey received an education and emigrated to Fulton County, Illinois, in 1833. In 1847, he moved to Lewistown and purchased a large tract of land. In 1850, Humphrey was employed as a clerk and owned $1,400 in real property. In 1853, he was elected, as a Democrat, county treasurer of Fulton County, and re-elected in 1854. He also served as deputy county clerk and recorder and justice of the peace. By 1860, he was employed as a merchant, and had amassed $14,000 in real and personal wealth. Humphrey was a member of the Odd Fellows.

In 1841, Humphrey married Virginia A. Lewis, and the couple had seven children. Virginia died in 1876, and in 1877 Humphrey married Alice M. Martin.
