Iverson Sr., Alfred

Iverson attended private schools and graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1820. He studied law, earned admittance to the Georgia bar in 1822, and started a practice in Clinton, Georgia. Iverson won election to the Georgia House of Representatives, serving from 1827 to 1830. He moved to Columbus in 1830 and continued to practice law. Iverson served as judge of the Georgia Superior Court, from 1835 to 1837. He won election to the State Senate, serving from 1843 to 1844, and served as presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1844 presidential election. Iverson won election, as a Democrat, to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1847 to 1849, alongside Abraham Lincoln. He returned to Georgia and served as judge of the State Superior Court, from 1850 to 1854. Iverson won election to the U.S. Senate in 1855, serving until he withdrew in January 1861. He returned to Columbus and continued the practice of law.
