John R. Jeffries was a saddler and sheriff. He moved from his native state to Crawford County, Illinois, while he was still a small child. In 1835, Jeffries moved to Coles County, settling in Charleston, where he operated a saddlery and harness business until his death. In 1850, he owned $1,000 in real property. From 1854 to 1856, Jeffries served as sheriff of Coles County. He also received appointment as deputy marshal of the Coles County Agricultural Society in 1856.
