Johnson married Elizabeth Coley while still living in New York. The couple had three children. Johnson and his family emigrated west first to Shawneetown, Illinois, and in 1825, came to Sangamon County. In 1827 and 1828, Johnson purchased 160 acres of public land near Loami. Johnson and his wife had another child while living in Sangamon County. In 1850, Johnson was farming and owned real estate valued at $3,000.
