Johnston, Squire H.

As the son of Abraham Lincoln's stepbrother, John D. Johnston, Squire H. Johnston was Lincoln's nephew. He worked as a farmer and harness maker throughout his life. He and his wife, Mary F. Johnston, had at least four children together. During the Civil War, he mustered into Company C of the Eighth Illinois Infantry as a private. His brother, Richard M. Johnston, served in the same company. At the time of his enlistment, he lived in Charleston, Illinois. After fighting for the Union Army for nearly four years, he mustered out on June 13, 1865.
