Johnston, Richard M.

As the son of Abraham Lincoln's stepbrother, John D. Johnston, Richard M. Johnston was Lincoln's nephew. He was also a farmer, cabinet maker, and Union soldier. During the Civil War, he mustered into Company C of the Eighth Illinois Infantry as a private. His brother, Squire H. Johnston, served in the same company. At the time of his enlistment, he lived in Charleston, Illinois. He was discharged August 5, 1864, when his term of service expired.
