Jones moved with his parents to Kaskaskia, Illinois, in 1828, and in 1836 he joined his brothers James and John in Sangamon County, where Emanuel married Eliza Shane. The couple had seven children together. Jones was a wheelwright in Sangamon County. In 1854, he moved his family from Loami to Macon County.
