In 1828, Jones moved to Kaskaskia, Illinois, with his parents and in 1831, he moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, where he married Mary Snyder in 1837. He was the brother of Emanuel Jones. Jones was a farmer. In 1850, he was farming in Sangamon County and owned over $2,000 worth of real property. Jones moved to Macon County, Illinois, sometime between 1850 and 1860. In 1860, he was farming in Macon County and owned $8,000 worth of real estate.
