Nathaniel Keith was a businessman, merchant, clothier, and tailor. Keith operated, in partnership with Solon Thornton, the firm of Keith & Thornton, a wholesale and retail establishment in Boston, Massachusetts, specializing in ready-made clothing and furnishings. Keith & Thornton was the successor of the firm Earl Johnson and Company. Keith & Thornton operated their business at 29 and 30 Dock Square from 1856 to 1857, when it became insolvent.

Keith married Susan T. Curtin in May 1839. The couple had three children.
