In 1836, Kent moved to Sangamon County, Illinois. Two years later, he married Lydia Walker, with whom he had five children. They settled in Springfield, where Kent worked in construction and wagon-making. Following Lydia's death in 1862, Kent remarried to Ellen Barber in 1863.
