Kinne was one of several immigrants and immigrant families who did not like conditions in Louisville, particularly with regard to the institution of slavery. He and others moved from Louisville to Highland, Illinois, in 1840. In June 1841, he married Salome Suppiger, with whom he had eight children. On May 8, 1861, he started his tenure as postmaster for Highland, remaining in the position until after the Civil War.
