Camden Knight was a clerk, grain dealer, and army officer. Knight was living and working as a clerk in Joliet, Illinois, in 1850. Between 1850 and 1860, Knight married Emma Wines, with whom he had at least two children. In 1860, the Knights lived in Mattoon Township, Coles County, Illinois, where Camden worked as a grain dealer and had amassed real estate valued at $4,000 and a personal estate value of $1,500. In July 1861, Camden enlisted as a second lieutenant in Company C, First Illinois Cavalry, serving until mustered out in July 1862.
