In 1824, Lasswell moved with his parents and siblings from Kentucky to Sangamon County, Illinois, where they settled near Springfield. In 1830, he married Sally Henry, and together they raised ten children. Lasswell was a farmer in Sangamon County; in 1850, he owned $3,700 worth of real estate. By 1860, he owned over $17,000 worth of real estate and $3,500 worth of personal property.
