Lanman, Charles

Charles Lanman, an author, artist, and librarian, received an education in his hometown and worked in business in New York City before returning to Michigan and taking charge of the Monroe Gazette in 1845. In the next two years, he worked as an associate editor of the Cincinnati Chronicle and an assistant on the New York Express. Lanman became the librarian of the War Department in 1849. The next year, 1850, he served as the librarian of copyrights and private secretary of Daniel Webster. By 1853, he was examiner of depositions for the southern states, and from 1855 to 1857, he served as the librarian and head of the returns office for the Interior Department.

Lanman authored various works, including The Private Life of Daniel Webster (published in 1852), Adventures in the Wilds of North America (published in 1854), and the Dictionary of the United States Congress (published in 1859). He married Adeline Dodge in June 1849 in Washington, DC. The couple had no children.
