Lewis settled in Springfield, Illinois, in 1838, and the following year he entered into partnership with Henry Vanhoff in Vanhoff & Lewis, carriage and wagon builders. In 1851, he married Cordelia Iles, with whom he had three children. From 1862 to 1864, Lewis served as an alderman of Springfield.
