In 1838, Little moved to Springfield, Illinois, where he was a tailor and clothing merchant from 1844 to 1876. In 1844, he married Ann M. Watson, and together they had five children. Little was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Springfield. In 1856, he opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
