George W. Lingenfelter was a saddler, postmaster, and a Republican. He lived in Mount Carmel, Illinois, at least as early as 1847 and manufactured and sold leather goods. He married sometime around 1847, and he and his wife, Delia, had at least six children together. By 1860, his personal estate was valued at $150. In May 1860, he served as one of Wabash County's delegates to the Republican State Convention held in Decatur, Illinois. During the 1860 Federal Election, he also contributed pro-Republican articles to the Mount Carmel Register. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him postmaster for Mount Carmel. Lingenfelter held this position until his death.
