Rhodes Lloyd was a businessman, clerk, city and county government official, and farmer. Lloyd became a resident of Springfield, Illinois in 1834. He opened a livery stable in November 1840. In 1850, he was working as a clerk and owned real property valued at $500. He was active politically in the local Whig Party. In April 1852, he ran on the Whig ticket for street commissioner of the city of Springfield, winning over his opponent by 189 votes. Lloyd resigned as street commissioner, however, in July 1852. He then worked as the county's jailor/jail warden from at least 1854 to 1858. In 1860, he was farming and owned real property valued at $5,000 and had a personal estate of $700.
Lloyd married Polly Turner in 1813. The couple had four children.
