Loose grew up in Pennsylvania and moved to Springfield, Illinois, in 1836. He married Mary Elizabeth Iles in 1844, and together they had ten children. Loose was initially employed as a clerk in a dry-goods store, and he later entered the business himself. He later purchased land in Sangamon County, on which he established a large, prosperous stock and grain farm. In 1860, he owned $150,000 worth of real estate and $20,000 worth of personal property. Politically, Loose was a Whig.
