John Marshall was the father of Samuel D. Marshall. By 1815, John Marshall had settled in Shawneetown, Illinois, where he was a merchant and a banker and also served as postmaster. He represented Gallatin County in the Illinois House of Representatives during the first session of the first General Assembly of the state, from 1818 to 1819. In 1850, Marshall was living with his wife in Shawneetown, where he was employed as a merchant and owned $12,000 in real property.
