In May 1829, Marsh was married in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Lydia Brady. Together, they had two children before Lydia's death in July 1833. Marsh remarried to Mary Lytle in April 1835, with whom he had four additional children. In May 1837, Marsh moved his family to Springfield, Illinois. From 1837 to 1839, he was employed as foreman of construction of the Illinois state capitol building in Springfield. He next served as foreman on the construction of the abutments for the Northern Cross Railroad bridge over the Sangamon River at Riverton. In 1850, Marsh was employed in farming. By 1860, he was still farming in Sangamon County, and had amassed $4,000 in real property, with a personal estate of $1,000.
