Marsh married Martha Jane Short in 1839. In 1850, they lived in Cass County, Illinois, where Matthew was a merchant, and owned $3,000 worth of real estate. By 1860, Marsh and his family lived in Jacksonville, Illinois; Marsh listed his occupation as "gentleman" and claimed $15,000 worth of real estate and $6,000 of personal property. He later moved his family to Chicago.
