Manners, Joseph D.

Joseph D. Manners was an attorney, Methodist, and a Republican. On May 15, 1845, he married Susan Ann E. Proctor, with whom he had multiple children. He was a member of the Highland Republican Club at least as early as 1858, and served as one of Madison County, Illinois's delegates to the 1858 Illinois Republican Convention. Madison County's Republicans also appointed him as an alternate delegate to the 1860 Illinois Republican Convention. By 1860, he owned $2,600 in real and personal property. In July of that year, delegates from Illinois's Fourteenth Judicial District elected him district attorney. In 1863, he received admission to practice in the U.S. Circuit Court, Southern District of Illinois.
