James H. McDaniel moved with his family to Sangamon County, Illinois, when he was a child. He married Elizabeth R. Correll McDaniel, the widow of his brother Robert P. McDaniel, in Sangamon County on November 3, 1853. The couple had three children. In 1860, McDaniel was a farmer with $1,200 in real estate and $500 in personal estate value.
