Dawson, Illinois, is a village ten miles east-northeast of Springfield. It was founded in 1854 on the Wabash Railroad line and named for John Dawson, an early settler and Illinois General Assembly member for sixteen years. The U.S. Post Office Department established a post office in 1850 as Buffalo Hart and changed the name to Dawson on November 15, 1854.
