In 1832, Melton and his brother Austin P. Melton established residence in a portion of Sangamon County, Illinois that would later be subsumed into Menard County. In 1840, Melton moved to an area near what would become Mason City in the soon-to-be established Mason County, Illinois, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Melton served as a justice of the peace for several years during his time in Mason County.
