In 1814, Melton moved from South Carolina to Indiana, where he married Olive Greenway. Their union produced eight children. In 1829, they settled their family in northern Sangamon County, where they remained until at least 1832. Soon after, they moved across the Sangamon River to Mason County. Olive Melton died in 1844. In 1848, Melton married Julia Rupel, and they had six children. From 1848 to 1860, they lived in Tazewell County, before moving back to Mason County. Melton was a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1860, Melton was farming in Tazewell County, owning $4000 in real estate, and $500 in person property.
