Morgan was a farmer and landowner who settled near Richmond in present-day Cass County, Illinois, before 1830. In 1850, Morgan owned real estate valued at $2,000. By 1860, he claimed over $8,000 worth of real estate and a personal estate of $1,600. In 1829, Morgan married Rebecca Taylor, with whom he had at least seven children.
