Mathew Morehead was a resident of Sangamon County, Illinois. He moved to Salisbury, Illinois, in 1833, opening the first cabinet shop in the village. In February 1834, he married Elizabeth Snodgrass. In 1836, Morehead purchased forty acres of public land northwest of Springfield, near Salisbury.
