As a young man, Moran moved from Baltimore to Mississippi, where he learned blacksmithing. In 1835, he settled in Fulton County, Illinois, where he engaged in his trade and later kept a general store. In 1851, Moran married Susan Ann Evans, with whom he had three children. In 1860, Moran was living with his family in Lewistown, Illinois, and owned $1,000 in real estate, with a personal estate of $200. In 1864, Moran moved to Canton, Illinois, where he continued mercantile pursuits.
