In 1831, Murphy moved his family from Ashland County, Ohio to Fulton County, Illinois. He settled near the town of Cuba and engaged in farming. Murphy was drafted in the Black Hawk War, however, his brother Adam served in his place. In 1850, Murphy owned $2,000 worth of real estate. By 1860, he had accumulated $5,000 worth of real estate, and had a personal estate of $400.
