Joseph Newman was the son of Henry Newman, a prominent early citizen of Springfield, Illinois. During the Mexican War, Newman was a private in Company A of the 4th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers under the command of Colonel Edward D. Baker. Newman died at the Battle of Cerro Gordo.
