By 1843, Parke had settled in Bloomington, Illinois, where he kept a grocery and bar in the Bloomington Hotel. On December 31, 1846, he married Alice E. Harris. Parke was a sergeant in the Mexican War, serving in the 4th Illinois Infantry. In 1850, Parke lived with Alice and one child in Bloomington, where he was a druggist.
